ADJ Conjures Up Carnival Magic at Historic Patras Party

Earlier this year, we found ourselves part of the historic Patras Carnival; Greece’s spectacular display of pagan festivity and color, and one of the biggest of its type in Europe. At the heart and soul of the celebration were thousands of revelers, both young and old, including Greek nationals and foreign visitors – and we’re proud to say that ADJ was there to provide pure lighting excitement for the masses!

Running over the three-week period preceding Lent and starting on the day of St. Anthony, the carnival happens each year in the country’s third largest city, Patras, and has a rich 180-year history. This year, the opening ceremony took place on Saturday 18th January in Georgiou Square in the center of the city, where hundreds of carnival-goers took to the streets for music, dancing and celebration. After this, the fun continued long into the night as local nightclubs and bars across the city opened their doors to throngs of party people.

Behind the spectacular lighting of all this carnival magic was ADJ, as our innovative range of lighting effects enhanced the festive atmosphere and brought the square to life with an array of vibrant colors, including luscious shades of purple, green, red and blue. The ceremony saw fireworks, dancing and an ADJ-lit stage on which the numerous acts performed. The lighting show, technical installation and sound engineering were provided by Patsis Andreas, owner of the Patras-based rental company Sound + Show.

Opting to use ADJ equipment to deliver the spectacular show at the opening ceremony – which featured a new Greek mainstream-pop act called Melisses (which, in English, means Bees) as well as various local folk bands – Sound + Show’s setup included eighteen Vizi Beam 5Rs, twelve Inno Color Beams, ten Vizi Wash 108 fixtures and two Scenesetter-24 controllers. The high-output Vizi Beam 5Rs sent tight, razor sharp beams across the stage and slicing through the night sky while the Inno Color Beams took the lightshow to a professional level by sending hard-edge beams of solid vibrant color sweeping across the square. Ensuring an all-round positive vibe, Vizi Wash 108 moving heads provided a luminous wash effect which submerged the crowd in a wave of color as they soaked up the magical atmosphere.

We were immensely proud to be involved in such an historic event and an all-encompassing show; this versatility is what we constantly strive for and it’s always inspiring to see our products used in different environments. By flooding the night-time square with stunning effects we helped create the intense, colorful atmosphere of the carnival and provided a truly mesmerizing lightshow for the European audience!
