A Homecoming Dance That’s Out Of This World!

When a Florida high school recruited 4SchoolsOnly to create a futuristic lightshow to match its ‘space’-themed homecoming, renowned lighting designer Arnoldo Offermann took things to the next level, using a selection of innovative ADJ and Elation products to bring to life an unbelievable ‘UFO’ truss structure.

Lighting Designer and DJ Arnoldo Offermnan’s company, 4SchoolsOnly (4SO), specializes in custom events for schools, bringing high-caliber DJs, jaw-dropping lightshows and custom sound packages to homecomings, proms and other school dances. So, when Seminole High School (Sanford, Florida) asked Arnoldo to deliver a huge homecoming prom with an exciting ‘space’ theme, he set about creating a tailor-made ADJ lighting rig that would take returning alumni to a whole other planet!

Working with the big space offered up by the school’s gymnasium, Arnoldo decided to create a gigantic UFO as the party’s main visual feature, positioning the DJ booth inside circular truss and building 16-foot Global Truss America structures either side. Despite involving blood, sweat and tears, Arnoldo and his team made it happen, leaving them with an incredible structure on which to mount their ADJ lightshow and produce something for the audience.

Inside the middle section of the truss ‘UFO’ Dotz Par units were used to add color and emphasize the DJ booth in the center. Meanwhile, inside the truss structures on either side of the booth, compact ADJ FREQ 5 Strobes were positioned to bring energy to the party, with their five-zone LED chase effects allowing Arnoldo to get creative with his strobing. Fixed vertically to the truss pillars, Arnoldo also decided to incorporate Eco UV DMX linear units into the setup, each providing far-reaching washes and strobing that immersed the crowd in UV thanks to their 18 3W UV LEDs and wide beam angle.

Attached to the bottom side of the circular truss, Arnoldo used two Fog Fury Jett foggers, whose capacity for vertical blasts of LED-lit fog simulated the UFO taking off. This added a truly unique visual element to the event, with the propulsion effect being triggered when big bass lines dropped, sending the hyped-up crowd into a frenzy! Following the ‘space’ theme elsewhere in the venue, GOBOs of astronauts, moons and spaceships were projected onto the walls of the gym, visible from the audience at all times due to their impressive size.

Aside from this effective concoction of strobing, GOBOs and LED-infused fog effects, Arnoldo mounted four super-bright lasers high above the crowd to add to the sci-fi/space aesthetic, while laser simulators were also used so that the 4SO team could hit the audience without concerns for safety. These lasers added huge amounts of energy to the party, working with the strobing and LED beams to create a club atmosphere for all the guests.

It didn’t stop there, either. Arnoldo put his appropriately named ADJ Accu UFO Pro to good use, with its rotating moving head sending 32 super-sharp beams flying around the room, while the powerful COB-LED color washes and pixel-mapped effects of the Dotz Matrix served as the perfect backdrop for the UFO structure, doubling as blinders as guests danced to high-energy music on the dance-floor below.

Complementing many of the ADJ products used, the spectacular rig also featured a selection of Elation effects, most notably the high-power Elation Sniper 2R, which stunned the crowds using its hybrid scan/laser/projector effects. Meanwhile, to control the customized lightshow, Arnoldo utilized Elation CompuShow SDE DMX-control software (and Elation MIDICON Pro), which made it easy for him to get imaginative with his ADJ effects and produce a display that transported the party to another planet!

So, with pumping dance music played through a superb sound system and a ‘space’-themed lightshow that brought pure lighting excitement to the dancefloor, the returning alumni of Seminole High School got the homecoming dance they dreamed of – thanks, of course, to Arnoldo’s creative talent and our flexible, forward-thinking lighting effects! It wasn’t just the guests who were happy, though: displaying his passion for producing mind-blowingly unique events, Arnoldo had an incredible time bringing a little piece of outer space to the Seminole gymnasium with his awesome ADJ setup, which was perfectly curated to meet the theme decided on by the school committee.

Projects like this just go to show that no matter how bizarre the idea or how big the vision, it’s always possible with ADJ lighting! It was a pleasure to see Arnoldo and the 4SO team – a renowned artistic force in the industry – using ADJ products so effectively, with our strobe effects, UV washes, LED-lit fog, high-energy lasers, moving heads and scanners combining to create a futuristic display. One thing’s for sure: this large-scale, sci-fi-themed homecoming was one that will be remembered for many years to come.
