To survive in today’s industry you have to be flexible – and that doesn’t just mean in your skills, but also in your lighting. Weddings have different requirements to children’s parties; school proms will need something a little more ‘out there’ than corporate events – and so on. Sometimes, with all those incredible ADJ moving heads and black lights to distract you, it’s easy to forget about the role that Par Cans play in the success of your events and that flexible wash lighting is essential.

Powered by five 6-IN-1 HEX LEDs comprised of Red, Green, Blue, Amber, White and UV, it’s ideal for washing stages and dance-floor in ultra-bright color, with its 30-degree beam angle and smooth color mixing capabilities enabling it to immerse large areas in dense hues. If you’re a lighting designer, mobile DJ, all-day wedding host or part of a stage production, the 5P HEX, with its 63 built-in color macros, offers a huge range of color possibilities.

It isn’t just the range of color which makes the 5P HEX such a vital addition to your lightning arsenal though: the fixture is perfect for stage productions where traditional stage lighting emits excessive heat onto performers; the LEDs remaining cool but always bright. The fixture also contains a UV diode, allowing you to use it as a standalone black light or infuse other colors with UV for cool effects; this is ideal for both mobile and club DJs playing at high school/college proms, teen birthday parties, ‘glow parties’ and other events catering to young audiences.

The big factor for the increased flexibility of the 5P HEX, however, comes from its patent-pending, intelligent ‘lie flat’ design, which sees the IEC and DMX ins/outs located on one side of the unit, allowing it to lie flat on the ground or be set inside truss to achieve cool up-lighting effects, either with scrim or without. The up-lighting capabilities of the 5P HEX are also extremely helpful if you work weddings, corporate parties or any other occasion where a more subdued, atmospheric look is needed. Due to the varying color spectrum of the fixture including Amber and White, the 5P HEX is ideal if you need to up-light the walls and décor at a wedding or in a house of worship, and thanks to the range of color possibilities you can customize the hue of these colors to suit your needs. What’s more, with UV capabilities and LED pulse and strobe effects, once the evening entertainment starts and the party gets going, your up-lighting can quickly change from subtle static or slow-changing colors to high-energy flashing UV effects – a task aided by the compatible Dotz Par RF wireless remote which is available as an additional add-on.

In terms of operation, the 5P HEX offers you a 4-button digital DMX display and five operational modes: Static Color (with 63 colors to choose from), Dimmer (RGBWA+UV), Program (with 7 built-in programs), Sound Active and DMX Controlled. For more intricate control, the latter gives you a choice of four DMX channel modes: the 6-channel mode offering 0-100% dimming over the basic six colors; 7-channel mode providing additional control over the master dimming; and 8-channel mode letting you control slow-fast strobing, slow-fast pulsing and slow-fast random strobing. Finally, in 12-channel mode, you can select color macros; activate built-in color change/fade programs and sound active color change/fade; adjust program speed and sound sensitivity; and select from five dim curves (standard, stage, TV, architectural and theatre).

As we’ve said, the 5P HEX is ideal for up-lighting thanks to its intelligent ‘lie flat’ design, but there is also flexibility when it comes to positioning the fixture for other uses. Its dual yoke enables you to hang the fixture – for dense, vibrant color washes from above – or set it on the ground at an angle to achieve wall washes, ceiling washes or to light features from below. Of course, whether you’re up-lighting or creating washes, you can achieve a more intense blend of pure lighting excitement using multiple fixtures. The 5P HEX is, therefore, data linkable via XLR and the power supply for up to 8 units (@ 120V) or 21 units (@ 240V) may be daisy chained via IEC cables.
