ADJ Lighting Provides The Passion At The Castle Of Love Festival

Moving beams, matrix panels, wash units and fog effects combine, as ADJ lighting puts the heart into Holland’s Castle of Love festival

Earlier in the summer, when the festival season was in full swing, lighting designer Tom Franken chose ADJ lighting and effects to bring to life the main stage at the Castle of Love event in Kerkrade, Netherlands. U Rent, a long-time partner of the ADJ Group, supplied the products and Tom – who has also programmed lighting at Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld and Dance Valley – used them to great effect on the main stage at the hugely popular two day open-air festival, which ran from August 16-17th.

Based at Castle Park Erenstein, not too far from the ADJ European Headquarters, the festival is one of the biggest in Europe, attracting over 20,000 visitors, and is now in its ninth year. Castle of Love is given a distinct atmosphere due its woodland surroundings and castle grounds setting, which is used as a backdrop for stages this year graced by top dance acts such as The Partysquad, Yellow Claw, Sick Individuals and Jay Hardway. But of course, as we know, it isn’t just the setting or the music which makes the party; the lighting plays a huge part too. That’s why Tom’s first port of call was ADJ – and we were more than happy to oblige!

In front of the historic castle itself, on the water that surrounds it, the main stage was set-up, with the dance-floor overlooking the water. This offered the perfect chance for our lighting to illuminate the building and send beams flashing across the water, creating pure lighting excitement for the music-lovers in attendance. Similar to those seen at festivals such as Tomorrowland, the stage was constructed in a ‘futuristic fairytale’ style, using an eclectic mixture of junk-yard items mixed with colorful décor and graffiti to offer a stage both in keeping with the castle setting but also with the modern dance music of the festival. Tom decided to install a range of ADJ products – including fog effects and Matrix panels – in order to accentuate the features of the stage and make the weekend a party to remember.

Being called ‘Castle of Love’, the event’s main branding is a bold love heart – something which was seen in many forms across the area over the course of the weekend. In keeping with this, Tom mounted nine Matrix Beam LEDs to create one big LED screen behind the DJ booth and used DMX-programming to create an inward moving heart powered by 3-watt warm-white LEDs. Meanwhile, throwing stunning beams of vibrant color lighting across the water and onto the dance-floor, six hyperactive ADJ 3 Sixty 2Rs used their 360-rotation, dual heads, and powerful Phillips 2R discharge lamps to create incredibly bright and fast moving effects, captivating the audience in an energetic and vibrant atmosphere.

Once the party really got going, Tom cranked the energy up a level, with eight Vizi Roller Beam 2Rs creating a mesmerizing display of rolling, 360-degree, multi-beam lighting and eight Vizi Beam Hybrid 2Rs generating prism split, multi-faceted beams light, both enhanced further by the use of strobe and pulse effects. Another product from our range of Matrix fixtures – the FREQ Matrix – further provided wild 16-zone LED strobe effects, with four of these units making for an energy-driven lightshow that matched the House and EDM vibes of the artists performing.

Keeping the audience and performers immersed in atmospheric color were sixteen WiFLY QA5 IPs; their 5-watt quad (RGBA) LEDs bringing the whole area to life with rich vibrant hues and smooth color mixing. Being IP65 outdoor rated, the QA5s ensured dependence no matter what the weather; when it did rain, the dance-floor remained alight with distinctive color and the party just kept going! For the cherry on the cake, Tom installed ten Inno Color Beam LEDs, which, when used in combination with the dense and effective output of four Fog Fury 3000s, delivered in-air lighting excitement, offering sharp beams of color to cut through the smoky haze which hung above the audience and floated like mist over the water.

It was a pleasure for us to be involved in such a successful festival as Castle of Love; the event is yet another example of how ADJ lighting can be used to create pure lighting excitement, and a clear demonstration of how it delivers every time! With our versatile product range and the forward-looking vision of Tom Franken and technical manager Tim Fruels, we transformed a historic castle setting into the venue for a young, fresh and energized two-day festival, with ADJ lighting and effects creating memorable moments and an unbeatable atmosphere for the eager European crowds. With the festival season now over for another year, we can’t wait until next summer!
